Inner Line Permits: India's
border area near Chinese occupied Tibet is
politically sensitive and foreigners need a
permit to travel between Tabo and Recong Pio.
Permit requires two passport photographs, and
photocopies of the identities and visa pages
from your passport.
In the Spiti valley free permits are issued by
the Assistant District Commissioner's office.
Elsewhere Himachal Pradesh direct application
are no longer allowed, so you have to go through
a travel agent. Shimla, Recong Peo and Manali
are good place to apply.
Permits are only valid for a week, and do not
permit overnight stays en route. Carry half a
dozen photocopies to give away at checkpoints.
